The whir of the mixer mashing the potatoes, the warmth of the air from the oven opening too many times, the nutmegy scent of pumpkin pie, the complete meal in all its glory—ah, the total indulgence of the senses that is Thanksgiving dinner in the making.

Until now, this perfect vision has remained untouched in our brains. For some reason — don't ask why — we decided to create this year's meal ourselves. Since we're going to need some serious help, we found a few cooking classes nearby that can boost our culinary confidence as we prepare for this season's hungry bellies.

The list continues for after Thanksgiving, because well, we still have to eat, and pb&js through Christmas won't cut it.

International Appetizers

Nancy Longo's Pierpoint Restaurant - 1822 Aliceanna St. - Fells Point
December 6 : 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Dec. 6: If you want to be the sophisticate, if you want to be the foodie, if you want to be the aficionado this holiday, this class is for you. You'll learn how to prepare quick appetizers for your holiday parties with menu items encompassing Spanish, Asian and many more cuisines.

pick Assembly/Decorating Cake Class

CakeLove - The Can Company - 2500 Boston St. - Canton
December 7 : 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Dec. 7: Warren Brown, owner of the CakeLove franchise, has more than seven shops under his belt, so he must be doing something right. At this class you'll learn how to create that simplistic "No, it was easy" look for your cakes that Brown is famous for. You'll also learn about buttercream and ganache as well as terminology and basic tools, but best of all you'll have the opportunity to put your new skills to the test assembling your own six-inch cake.

Comfort Foods Cooking Class

For the Love of Food - 20 Clarks Lane - Reisterstown
December 7 : 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Dec. 7: These are the foods that winter food dreams are made of: mac and cheese, fried chicken, tomato soup and apple crisp with ice cream. Relive these comforting dreams amidst the stress of the holidays.

pick Holiday Desserts Cooking Class

For the Love of Food - 20 Clarks Lane - Reisterstown
December 9 : 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Dec. 9: We know everyone hates fruitcake, but what about a tiny fruitcake cookie with bourbon sherry glaze? We still love pumpkin pie and all, but if we're looking for inquiries regarding our desserts for years to come, we need to hit up this class.

Have you tried any of these cooking classes in the past? Tell us about your experiences and your Thanksgiving dinner plans here.
