High 5: Cool licks
Sylvan Beach
A perennial favorite among Baltimore ice cream connoisseurs, Sylvan Beach (soon to be renamed Taharka Brothers) offers homemade ice cream with a hefty scoop of good karma. The nonprofit Sylvan Beach Foundation makes its own ice cream from local ingredients (you're supporting the economy) and the business itself is managed and run by inner-city young men aged 18 to 25 (you're supporting an at-risk group). The dreamy ice cream comes in beaucoup flavors, including an ever-evolving array of new creations like key lime pie, red raspberry cheesecake, lemon cookie custard and white Russian. There are two Sylvan Beach locations, one in Mount Vernon and the other in Mount Washington next to Whole Foods.—Robert Jacobs
