Tuna dumplings at XS
First impression: Aww, it's purdy!
Contents: Raw yellowfin tuna wrapped as a dumpling around a tasty mixture of crab meat, wasabi sauce and avocado
Fork or chopsticks? This is almost impossible to eat with chopsticks. We had no problem picking it up, but the dumpling is too big to stuff in your mouth. Biting into this dumpling is a bad idea, because you'll look like a savage. Trust us, we tried. We couldn't seem to gnaw off a bite-sized piece before the waiter came back to give us strange looks. If you somehow find a way to stuff the whole dumpling into your mouth, there is no way you're going to be able to chew it. We opted to use a fork (and knife) for this one.
Damage: $10.50 (appetizer). We don't believe that two of those dumplings are worth $10.50, especially considering the average price for sushi at XS.
Decision: The tuna dumplings are pretty good. You won't feel bad about ordering it for the first time, but we don't think you'll go to XS just for the tuna dumplings. While the fish could be fresher, the meal was light and tasty. This dish is an appetizer, so you're supposed to order something else afterward, anyway.
