Joss Cafe, Baltimore
The recently opened Joss Café in Baltimore took over the sprawling residence at 413 North Charles St. Natural, eco-friendly bamboo accents flank an impressive space and chefs (like their Annapolitan counterparts) shout greetings to diners who can sit at the expansive sushi bar area or in one of two dining rooms (upstairs and downstairs).
Menu: Primarily the same as the Annapolis menu. The chefs are happy to make anything that might be missing for those who have previously dined at the original. One notable oversight here is the absence of a martini menu: Although the Annapolis location is only licensed for beer and wine, Baltimore's site came with a full liquor license though it's not yet been utilized. The same beer and wine selections are available, but given the Mount Vernon location (which offers serious sushi competition) the restaurant could benefit from the addition of some specialty drinks and a full bar.
Crowd: Sparse at times, as the location is still gaining popularity. Mount Vernon-y (i.e. hipsters, art students and college professors).
Vibe: Much larger and more spacious than its Annapolis counterpart, the Baltimore Joss location maintains the clean, natural-wood décor and friendly atmosphere.
Overall: Sharing knowledgeable staff and experienced sushi chefs between the two locations, Joss' inaugural season has certainly attracted Baltimoreans who know and love the Annapolis café. Additionally, a prime location offers great visibility to locals who seem more than willing to embrace yet another sushi restaurant. It has yet to be seen, however, if the lightning bolt of success can strike twice for Joss.
