Joss Café, Annapolis
Anyone who knows Annapolis sushi knows Joss. It is the place to go for decently priced ($3.50-$10.95) authentic sushi. Squished into a narrow commercial rowhouse on historic Main Street, guests are literally seated elbow-to-elbow, and it's almost always packed. A back area houses tables for larger groups, but be prepared for an intimate dining experience. An open bar area where chefs prepare sushi to-order ensures quality control.
Menu: A piquant selection of the freshest of seafood brings a lot to the table. Consider the expertise of the sushi chefs and you're looking at the ultimate sushi experience. Try the fresh tuna avocado salad ($8.95) as an appetizer, an assortment of rolls including the Main Street roll (lump crab meat and scallion mixed with creamy spicy sauce and avocado, smoked salmon outside, wrapped in sweet seaweed, $10.95) and the mango mochi for dessert.
Crowd: An amalgam of midshipmen, tourists and locals spanning all walks of life just jonesing for some quality sushi
Vibe: Snuggly, if you're not too concerned about personal space. This is a prime location on Main Street near a host of bars with live music and vibrant nightlife.
Overall: Joss is another Annapolis institution, and the food more than makes up for the sardine-can effect. You may have to wait in the narrow hallway for a table, but it's more than worth it.
