I actually enjoyed it

After reading mixed reviews on this restaurant, and living in the Waverly Community I decided to visit because I was told the food was great, and my neighbor was CORRECT. I had the fried chicken platter which came with mounds of food, I was forced to take a bag home LOL. I think the thing that stands out the most about this restaurant is the location. I never expected this type of restaurant on Greenmount Ave. Most of the reviews that I come across mentioned the chef/owner, and he did come to my table to talk for a moment and the things that I've red in print seem to be correct very likable person with a clear cut goal for the area. I made a reservation for the following week and thought the place was great

Won't be going back...

I live in the area and I've passed by this place several times. After reading mixed reviews I decided to check this place out for my self. The owner/chef as well as the staff working on the Sunday I ate there have no idea what the meaning of hospitality is. I was not greeted at all and after standing by the door of the very small dining room I decided to seat my self. I was greeted in my seat by a girl who told me it was only her second day working there. She presented me with a menu along with a smile (the only one I got during my entire experience there). The chef did come out to greet me after he was made aware of my presence. Although I don't know if that helped my opinion of the place due to the fact that he looked at me with a face worthy of a mug shot. I read some history on him and found out he is a former marine, which may explain his demeanor. Long story short...food was excellent but staff and atmosphere were horrible. I did not feel welcomed and I will not be coming back.

Greenmount finally got it right

Something has finally come to Greenmount that is worth me writing a review Darker than Blue cafe has become one of my favorite locations. I met the chef at Tastew of Waverly last year he seems to be a cheerful fellow so I took his card. I hate that I waited so long to get there....the southern platter of chicken was awsome, and I have never had mac & cheese with blue cheese in it what a great combo. Keep up the good work Darker than blue and you have a customer for life

Hot spot in Baltimore
By Local law review from Waverly, March 15, 2009

My sister recommended this restaurant, she's been there at least 2 or 3 times. I was a little worried with her telling me it's location. I took my wife and her brother there last night it was simply incredible. The food was past the point of great, and the portions are enormous. I think the thing that I loved most besides the ribs, was the fact that we didn't have to pay a cork fee for bringing a few bottles of wine , that has always been a turn-off to me. I wish the owner much success and he definitely has a diamond of a restaurant.

Bad business
By Sunshine from Arcadia, March 14, 2009

My husband and I found Darker Than Blue we thought we found a restaurant we could enjoy with friends and family. Well I made reservations for Saturday March 14 @ 6:30. Needless to say I did not get there until 7, but I did call and when I called the owner told me he could seat me around 7:30. So when I got to the restaurant @ 7 the waitress took my reservation for 7:30. The owner did not know we were on the books for 7:30 and told us he did not think he could serve us. He proceeded argue with my friends that I told this was a great restaurant. He was extremely rude to us. When I left I said have a good evening and he looked right at me and said nothing. I will NEVER go back to that restaurant again. When I go back to work on Tuesday I will tell all of my co-workers not to go there and the clients. Oh and by the way as we were eating we saw a roach on the floor. Not good. The way this economy is today we should be treating everyone like they are our only client.

"Not Very Pleasant" Owner/Chef
By ID from downtown, December 21, 2008

Overall rating:

I find the chef/owner to be not very pleasant. I do not allow one experience at a restaurant to stop me from giving a bad review but I've been to DTBC at three separate times and they were all the same. On my first visit, I came alone and was treated very rudely. Being a small new restaurant in the INNER CITY, you would think the chef would take an extra step to make his guests feel comfortable. That is not the case.

On the second visit, I didn't eat but walked in to see about scheduling a 21st birthday dinner for my son. The owner immediately told me that he was leary about hosting young people dinner. I explained that it was a family dinner celebration and then he said he would allow the dinner if I gave a non-refundable deposit of $100 to hold the date. I only had intentions on inviting 6-8 people. That was the first time I'd heard about a deposit at a restaurant (especially one who's trying to get business).

On the third visit, I came in with my companion. He is a large man who prefers to sit in armless chairs. While my companion was parking his car, I entered the DTBC and asked the owner (who met me at the door), if I could have an armless chair placed at the table. He looked at me as if I asked for $$$. Then he proceeds to ask if I need an armless chair as well. After dinner my companion asked if the venue was available for private events. The owner said that he was extremely selective with regard to whom he allows to rent his venue but when my companion and I left he followed us to the door and once he saw what my companion was driving, he proceeds to holler through the door, "Please call me so that we can schedule your dinner party!" My companion and I have never returned.

To sum everything up, the food is good but because of the owner/chef, the experience is absolutely HORRIBLE. I make a great effort to NOT DIRECT MY FRIENDS/FAMILY to Darker Than Blue Cafe because I know if the owner/chef hasn't changed his manners, they will not have a good experience.

I was surprised at the local fan fair that this small yet delicious restaurant has gotten so a recently visited, i was blown away by the super service and great selections on the menu. I only had time for the stuffed shrimp starter and jerk wings but if they are any indication of the total menu I am sold

A Happy Birthday
By ms.b from baltimore, November 1, 2008

I recently had the great pleasure to enjoy a meal at "Darker Than Blue Cafe". I took my brother and cousin there for a birthday meal. My brother and I are members of the guest service industry so our standards are very high. We where greeted by a sweet young lady who seemed to be on her second day (just guessing I know experience when I see it) she seated us and promptly took our drink orders. We got our drinks and bread quickly. The cornbread along with the food and sweeten tea. It was all so good. We where even greeted by the Chef Jenkins himself. Which seems to be his standard.

Great Meal!
By damePETTIS from Parkville, August 20, 2008

While leaving one destination, I stumbled upon Darker than Blue. I'm so very glad that I found this wonderful restaurant. I visited on a Tuesday after work. The waiter was very attentive, the chef/owner spoke with each of his guests. I order the crabmeat stuffed salmon, steamed baby spinach leaves and a substiution of jasmine rice. MY FAULT: I ate too much of the delicious cornbread (didn't have enough room left to eat my meal). The meal was a very generous portion. My only complaint: since I do not eat crabmeat, I asked for the salmon without crabmeat but they charged me the stuffed crabmeat price. I will definitely return!!!

Unexpected Surprise
By Kearae from Windsor Mill, June 29, 2008

The first time I went to this place, my famikly and I were in awe. We were met with a pleasant server that was attentive and excellent. Our drinks were excellent ( Mango Tea). I ordered ribs. I was floored for the amount of food I received. Then I was sceptical of the Mac& cheese, but it was just like mom's. The spinach was excellent as well. Other in my party ordered Chicken Alfredo and ceasar salads. My fork went to each plate with pure pleasure. I told the world abouth the best ribs in town and they agreed. I want to yell from the mountains to tell the world this spot is super hot. Since my first vivist I have gone 3 others and the service was still superb.
