Among the things for which our fair city is known (beehives, potato chips and "The Wire," to name a few), notable is our profound love and respect for some darn good seafood. The Baltimore palate is a refined one when it comes to a nautical haul, and not just because we appreciate good cooking. The demand for fresh, competitively-priced seafood is rivaled only by a penchant for eclectic ambience, presentation and, of course, cheap specials.

Most of the seafood consumed in Baltimore, even of the local variety, is farm-raised, though some restaurants do carry wild fish, such as salmon or rockfish, with a price tag to prove it. What makes Baltimore seafood distinct is more than its ubiquity or the liberal use of Old Bay; it's the atmosphere and the commitment to delivering the freshest and best catches available. Due to its mid-Atlantic location on a major waterway, Baltimore is a hub for seafood that comes in from all over. As a result, the plethora of maritime offerings are as varied and distinct as the restaurants in which they're served.

Here are five of our favorite Baltimore seafood restaurants.

I must say, after trying some seafood down south, no one does seafood like the Chespeake Bay area.
