From the crew that brings you the delightful Hull Street Blues comes The Whetstone Grill, a new Locust Point joint slingin' sandwiches. What was once the bar Tim's has been converted into a neighborhood place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, when time is not necessarily on your side. Subway this is not, but tasty it certainly is.
Crowd: You'll find lots of locals from the neighborhood stopping by for some eats, particularly a crowd from Tide Point. Add in the new free water taxi that stops at the bottom of Hull Street, and there are sure to be Baltimoreans from various points of the city patronizing the Grill along with the occasional intrepid tourist.
Food: Whetstone serves breakfast, lunch and, now, dinner, and offers a plethora of sandwiches, salads, wraps and more during each. Panini come hot off the (panini) press stuffed with various and sundry goodies like melted cheeses; fresh, crispy veggies and chunks of chicken. There are multiple wraps to choose from, but if you don't see something you like and you're feeling creative, there is also the option to create your own.
Morning means classic breakfast sandwiches that are better than anything you could get beneath the golden arches, like a bagel BLT sandwich or an egg and cheese on English muffin. As an added bonus, none of the sandwiches, salads or wraps on Whetstone's menu will set you back more than $7. Whetstone also has a catering menu available, and delivers to local businesses.
Drinks: Of course you can get standards like soda, water, juice, etc., but maybe you've had a rough day. Maybe you need something a tad stronger. Lucky then that Whetstone has beer and wine, which is also available for carryout. Hooray! And, if you're looking for something non-alcoholic but still zippier than soda, check out the icy cold smoothies available in mango, strawberry, watermelon and mocha flavors.
Digs: The light, airy space is tucked among the rowhouses of this cozy neighborhood, and floor-to-ceiling windows along the front door let in rays of natural light. While the bright white walls (decorated with art by local artist Sydney Hopkins) make the space seem huge, the rich wood floors make it feel warm.
Bottom line: Locust Point was in need of a quick place for tasty eats, and now it has one. Expect more than what you'd get at a run-of-the-mill chain sandwich shop, and you'll certainly get it.
