What other type of venue does Baltimore need? What is it lacking?
You know, it's starting to become really happening up here. In the time since I moved to Baltimore in the '90s, [Federal Hill] even was beat, old and dilapidated businesses that weren't really happening. And then it turned around, because it obviously couldn't do anything but get better.

That's the way Baltimore is going, getting people to come in and do business. We've got awesome art and tons of music that's always been overlooked. Coming from D.C. or down South going up to New York, Baltimore just gets blown right by. It's a pretty cool city. There are other cities that have a better reputation and we've actually got a lot of happening stuff going on here.

There's too much Inner Harbor, Power Plant Live-type stuff, commercialized stuff in Baltimore. You get better food and better entertainment if you have a little bit more of an independently owned or family-run place. Those franchises, there are tons of those. And they're not all bad, but this town has always been kind of a neighborhood town, and it'd be nice if we kept it that way to some extent.

Where do you like to hang out in Baltimore?
Ottobar, and Hampden's cool. I like Fells Point—Fells Point's where I pretty much lived for a long time when I first came here; it's where I started up my first pie shop. It's just kind of stinky and dirty down there and it's not really the greatest place for your liver—Baltimore really isn't, period. I like getting sushi downtown, Joe Squared is really good, they're awesome. It's got a reputation for good food, but you get a variety of people who go there. I love places where people can get together and get along and mix it up.

Return to Joe Squared's Joe Edwardsen.
