I first came to Miss Shirley's in winter 2006 because my boyfriend talked me into eating there instead of just going to get college food. It was cold, so I wasn't really up to walking up the road to get some breakfast, but in hindsight I am so glad that I was talked into going there, and I have since returned there many times.
We decided on Miss Shirley's because we always noticed that there was quite a crowd every weekend morning for their Breakfast and Lunch. There are so many customers that Miss Shirley's has a waiting room with couches, free Seattle's Best coffee, and a tv(usually playing Food Network). Don't let the waiting room scare you away though - I have never waited more than 15 minutes to be seated even when it is packed.
I have had the opportunity to eat at Miss Shirley's many times and I have rarely ordered something (I've tried Breakfast and Lunch items) that I didn't love. The menu contains some classic favorites, but there is always a twist on something classic. For example, instead of a side of boring old fries, you can order a cone of Sweet Potato Fries that comes with two sauces; one is a ketchup-like sauce but with mango sweetness included and the other is a light yellow sauce that is sweet and creamy. If you are ordering from their Lunch menu, definitely try those. I have never had the opportunity to eat at Miss Shirley's with a child, but I often see families with even small children in the restaurant, so it seems to be child-friendly, especially because they serve Breakfast all day which usually makes kids happy.
The first thing I ever tried from Miss Shirley's was an omelette with Tomato, Basil, and cheese and It was absolutely to-die-for. It was served with biscuits and home fries, so let that tell you that you don't exactly want to come here if you are on a strict diet. For example, I once ordered Cream-cheese-stuffed french toast with bruleed bananas on the side and I received what looked like a dessert! Even though it tasted amazing, I felt a little bad for ordering such an unhealthy breakfast. I wouldn't suggest making a weekly habit of eating at Miss Shirley's unless you are looking to gain weight, rather make it a monthly or bi-monthly date. :)
The menu has some items that change out seasonally, and those are always fun to try as well. The service runs from good to about average, but the food makes up for average or sometimes a little slow service. Sometimes you may be placed at a table that is very close to another table, especially if you are only in a party of two, but just let that be a reminder that you are at a restaurant that is known for good food, and that is why it is so popular. Most entrees range from $9-$16, some more some higher, but either way you get what you pay for and it is always presented very nicely. The food always tastes fresh and is garnished with fresh herbs(for savory dishes) or powdered sugar (for sweet dishes).
The decor of the restaurant is bright walls and rather artsy photographs and art on the walls(very Baltimore) and the liveliness of the atmosphere is a good wake-up on sleepy Sunday mornings. There is plenty of parking in a few lots and it is in a very nice area of Roland Park that locals like to call Alonsoville, because it contains Alonso's, Loco Hombre, Miss Shirley's, and S'ghetti Eddies right next to or across from each other, and they are all owned by the same people. In fact, if you come in to a long wait at Miss Shirley's you have the option of getting a discount at Alonso's/Loco Hombre instead!(Might I add that is another good restaurant, but more for Lunch/Dinner)
There's a reason Miss Shirley's received Best Breakfast in Baltimore, and you should see for yourself why!

I have eaten here twice and enjoyed everything. The food is very rich, but they are willing to accomodate all requests and I have 2 small children.
Enjoyed it and will be back.

The apple pancakes were horrible, heavy and sodden! Avoid them at all costs! Our other meals were OK.

This is some mighty fine breakfast and lunch fare. The place is small so there is often a wait for this delicious food on the weekends. One note, if you order coffee make sure to take advantage of the free refills, since the price per cup is rather high (over $2).
