At this popular hub on the square, I rarely know what to expect.

First, the serving team spans from disinterested college kids to recent transplants who truly hope to please. I have felt like a valued customer upon one visit, and felt totally unwelcome at other times.

The food is, simply put, the best I have yet encountered in the Canton area. At a cookie cutter Irish-y pub, you say? I hear you, but from the buffalo burger to the more ornate scallop risotto dish, the food here is something to look forward to once your order has been placed. Without fail, each member of my party has left satisfied.

As I alluded to in the above paragraph, partially because of snobbery, partially because of what I think a legitimate impulse to seek authenticity, the whole Irish stuff seems dumb. An arbitrarily selected ethnic identity sometimes serves a thematically interesting purpose, but here, it is a layer that does not jive with the positives I have elsewhere identified.

Also, I know a business has to make money, but some greater distinction between party time and dining time would be appreciated. I'm not a stiff, I like to have fun, but if I am having a meal I don't need some drunk a**hole to stumble over and almost upon my table. Moreover, I couldn't permit my own anger...the place is not set up for all parties to get along. For Claddaugh's size, it manages to feel cramped. A better floor arrangement, perhaps?

I've never eaten at Claddagh's, so I can't rate the food (even though the system is forcing me to). However, as a bar, it's a great place to hang out. Claddagh's is really 3 bars in one. On the 1st floor you have a traditional neighborhood bar, often with a live cover band. The last time I was there the band covered a Dave Matthew's Band song, and actually did a good job. Impressive!

Upstairs is divided into two very different areas. First is the sports area, with a pool table, tvs, etc. It has the feel of a friendly frat house where you expect a beer pong tournament or a game of 3 man to happen at any moment. The second area, and it's my favorite by far, is the front room. The lighting is quite dim, there are 2 leather loveseats and several hassocks, at Christmas they light the fireplace mantle with small white lights, and the vibe is very intimate. Go there on a weeknight with a date and settle into a loveseat together. I guarantee that you will not want to leave. When the bartender notices how cozy the two of you are getting, he'll even come out from behind the bar to bring you more drinks so that neither of you have to get up. And the bar is quite well stocked. There are even a few decent red wines. Shocking, I know! The prices aren't too bad either. Ladies and gentlemen, it does not get any better as a great spot to take a date, or even just go and chill with a few good friends.
