Cat Power
Liner notes: A country transplant grown tall in the big city, singer-songwriter Cat Power (née Chan Marshall) coats introverted, folksy musings with the merest glaze of sugary pop. Bittersweet, true, but it's a taste you can easily grow to love.
Sounds familiar: Chan's cover of Cat Steven's "How Can I Tell You" became damn-near ubiquitous during DeBeer's Christmas ad blitz in 2006, and this year's Jukebox—Chan's eighth studio (and second cover) album—is further cashing in on her uncanny ability to remake the classics in her own image.
On stage: Quietly captivating. Little more than sparse guitar and simple piano buoy Chan's signature softly-sung vocals.
Hit or miss: A nice breather during a hectic day, or an interminable pause before the resumption of the rock? It all depends on your perspective, natch.—Tom Korp
Cat Power plays the North Stage Aug. 9 from noon-12:50 p.m.
