Jack Johnson
Liner notes: Erstwhile wave walker and quintessential brah's brah, Hawaiian scion Jack Johnson explores surfer ruminations through languid, Nick Drake-ish croons and bluesy song structures.
Sounds familiar: A hit with hip parents and cool kids, Johnson's soundtrack work for 2006 animated feature "Curious George" earned the singer-songwriter his first No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. This year's follow-up, "Sleep Through the Static," also reached that peak position, albeit with a more somber sound.
On stage: Aided by bandmates Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski and Zach Gill, Jack Johnson maintains his laid-back demeanor even in an upbeat concert setting.
Hit or miss: Arguably a nice send-off to a long day of festival shenanigans, the hard rock set might do better to bring a blanket and take a nap.—Tom Korp
Jack Johnson plays the North Stage Aug. 9 from 8:45-10 p.m.
