Ever since the iPod made its debut in 2001, pop culture pundits have been announcing the death of the record industry. The huge music conglomerates have taken a major hit. Major acts are now struggling to break 500,000 sales. CD megastores, a landmark of the late '80s and early '90s, are slowly dying off. Even the BMG Music Service is closing its doors. The mainstream record business is dying, but the independent scene remains strong thanks to small labels that cater to a specific niche and a devoted fan base. These labels are not out for financial gain, but simply aim to distribute music to the people who love it. Baltimore’s independent record labels are as diverse as the city itself, running the gamut from punk rock to gospel house. Here are some of Baltimore’s finest independent record labels.
