What's that sound?

It's late night in Baltimore, you're moving in and out of the bars, stopping somewhere to get a bite to eat, and then a loud orchestrated sound comes bounding out of a random building. You think you detect a kick drum and riffing guitars. You turn to your partner and ask, "Did you know there was a club here?" Both of you look around and realize not only did you not know, you also can't even locate the entrance.

You finally make your way into the building hosting this mysterious sound and enter a room packed with people of all different ages, backgrounds, shapes, colors, sizes; you name it, they're here. On stage, the band is completely in the moment pouring every ounce of energy they have into their instruments as the crowd responds with movement and applause.

There's no backstage and the band soon joins the crowd, as a few members of the crowd become the next band; everyone has a voice, everyone has a place. Welcome to Baltimore DIY (do it yourself) where musicians, artists and activists go to great lengths to create and express what they're about.

Here are five places to check out the Baltimore underground.
