Did you think Baltimore's experimental rock scene peaked with Animal Collective's break back in '03? It turns out they were just scratching the surface. The thousands of devotees, and the 77 bands—most of whom were from the self-proclaimed Greatest City in America—at the 2008 Whartscape festival proved that the roots of the city's music scene reach far deeper, and far weirder places than most of us had imagined. Wildfire Wildfire (in downtown Baltimore) and Carpark Records (in Washington D.C.) have put out some of the strongest, most exciting records of the last couple years.

In this cherry-picked overview of Wham City and related artists, Metromix introduces you to some of the best, brightest and just plain bizarre bands in Baltimore.
