If you weren't looking, you may have missed the fact that Baltimore hosts a thriving scene of jam and improv bands that play venues from the tiny Hour Haus to the more established Recher Theatre. Instead of cramming the psychedelic expanses of Phish and the Grateful Dead into the dingy holes of Baltimore, these acts have reinterpreted what it means to be a jam band. Before, artists who claimed a wide berth of stylistic influence and incorporated extensive improvisation into their sets fit a disappointingly similar mold. These musicians are breaking down the barriers to funk, electronic and dance music. While few of these bands are likely to be playing Bonnaroo anytime soon, there are still plenty of local outdoor festivals where you can catch them playing live during Baltimore's summer months.
