It's great to support local music. Baltimore is home to a lot of talented up-and-coming artists who may one day make it big. When that happens, you can brag to your friends that you saw them at some hole-in-the-wall before anyone ever heard of them. But, let's face it, as great as many local bands are, you aren't always in the mood. You'd prefer to hear something you know and love, something you remember and can sing along to. That's what cover bands are for.

Despite what some music snobs may say, being a musician in a cover band takes considerable talent. Not only do they have to learn a lot of different songs, they have to perform the work so it sounds like the original. (People often get testy when bands decide to "re-interpret" a classic, unless, of course, it's the Egg Babies.)

Taking things one step further than standard cover bands is the tribute band. While a cover band performs material from a variety of bands, tribute bands usually stick to just one group's repertoire. Some tribute bands often dress and act like that band in an effort to create an authentic live experience.
