One of our favorite Baltimore summer traditions is grabbing a blanket and some snacks and catching a free (!) outdoor movie at one of several scenic spots around the city. It's not often we consider doing away with our Netflix subscription, but between June and August, we hardly need it. This year's selection includes Oscar winners, vampires and some of last summer's blockbusters. With the right planning, you could catch a different film every week all summer.

JHU Summer Outdoor Film Series
- Shriver Hall, JHU Homewood Campus - 3400 N. Charles St. - Charles Village
June 12-July 24: This film series is a little different because it also includes live music before the screenings. Our pick: ...soihadto... with "Dark Knight"
Outdoor Family Movies
- Shamrock Park - N. Hickory Avenue and Lee Way - Bel Air
June 12-Aug. 21: The Bel Air event is heavy on the G-rated films, but you should still be able to enjoy yourself if you can ignore the wee ones.
Films on the Pier
- Fells Point - Not Available - Fells Point
July 1-Aug. 19: This series has one of the best lineups and locations. Films on the Pier focuses on new or recent releases. Our pick: "Twilight," natch
The Waterfront Invasion Free Outdoor Movie Series
- Inner Harbor - Light Street and Pratt Street - Baltimore
July 1-29: This West Shore Park event has plenty of space and welcomes visitors interested in a wide variety of movie genres. Spread out a blanket or kick back in your chair to catch some of our favorite monstery movies. Our pick: "Gremlins"
Flicks from the Hill
- American Visionary Art Museum - 800 Key Highway - Federal Hill
July 2-Aug. 13: Flicks from the Hill is awesome for two reasons: You can get into AVAM for free and the event shows classic films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Ghostbusters." Our picks: "Dr. Strangelove" and "Dr. No."
Little Italy Open Air Film Festival
- Little Italy - S. High Street and Fawn Street - Baltimore
July 3-Aug. 28: This is the classic event that begat all other outdoor movie events. The setting is just right. You're supposed to watch Italian-themed movies in a neighborhood square while eating take-out paninis or gelato. Our pick: "Roman Holiday;" it's film location porn
Comcast Outdoor Film Festival
- The Music Center at Strathmore - 5301 Tuckerman Lane - North Bethesda
Aug. 14-21: This one's a bit of a haul, but if you happen to find yourself near Bethesda the week of the film festival, you might as well try to catch a free movie, most of which are recent releases. Our pick: "Slumdog Millionaire;" hope for an impromptu Bollywood-style sing-along
