Neighborhood guide: Station North
For so long, the only noteworthy attractions in the area just north of Penn Station were The Charles Theatre and Club Charles. Due in equal parts to the popularity of that multiscreen movie house and the ever-expanding Maryland Institute, the area has changed so drastically that it is now designated an arts district. You'll find movies, plays, art openings, crepes and even tapas here.
Neighborhood guide: Charles Village
Charles Village, home to many Johns Hopkins students, has gone through urban renewal renovations in recent years. For the time being, though, it's still gritty enough to be interesting. The neighborhood's highlights include blocks of colorfully painted Victorian rowhouses, a handful of coffee shops and the Baltimore Museum of Art with its kick-ass gift shop.
