"Out Late" is a documentary film that blends quality filmmaking with appealing subject matter. The movie records the lives of people in their 60s, 70s and even 80s coming out of the closet in very public ways.
Filmmakers Jennifer Brooke and Beatrice Alda treat their sometimes over-the-top subjects with dignity and respect, which is tough when you're interviewing haggard old transvestites.
Brooke and Alda wait too long to introduce gay-bashing as an issue, though. Cathy and Michelle, a lesbian couple in Kansas, are used as a catalyst to discuss gay marriage issues, sparking a discussion with neighbors about civil rights.
"Out Late" provides a look into an older generation's fear of being gay in America. If this is the last generation to be closeted on such a grand scale, the film is worth watching as an historical record. It proves that America hasn't entirely outlived its history of bigotry.
Plus, you get to see an old, naked tranny putting on a bathing suit.
Catch it: If you find the subject of old gay people at all appealing, you should probably check this one out.
