Carroll Pickett oversaw more than 95 executions during his 15 years as a death house chaplain in Huntsville, Texas, but of all the valleys he walked through, it's the possible wrongful execution of Carlos DeLuna that casts doubt in his soul.

Raw and emotional human moments are captured in this documentary, illustrating the controversial aspects of capital punishment. Directed by Steve James and Peter Gilbert ("Hoop Dreams"), the film makes the issue worth caring about in light of more buzz-worthy political phrases such as "environmentalism" and "the Iraq War."

Human pain is shown in a way that is easily transferred to viewers making this documentary a journey of hope and sadness. The heavy subject matter does not drag viewers into utter depression, though. That said, this is definitely not a date movie.

Catch it: If you care about social issues, you should check out this doc. You may even consider it a wake up call.
