Weekend hit list
Nov. 20-22: Meet the Boss, get girly and melt your banana
By Emily Testerman
Special to MetromixNovember 18, 2009
Jewelry Fair
- The Walters Art Museum - 600 N. Charles St. - Mount Vernon
Friday-Sunday: In order to ward off jewelry cravings until Christmas morning (we know that ring has been on your mind for a while now), the Walters hosts a weekend of Classical Links: eclectic and traditional jewelry selections offered by more than 20 artisans. Attend workshops, view fashion shows and perhaps find that perfect item for a loved one. If that loved one is yourself, that's fine by us.
Melt Banana
- The Ottobar - 2549 N. Howard St. - Charles Village
Saturday: Yasuko Onuki. Who, or what is this, you may ask? Onuki is the female lead singer of the Tokyo-based band Melt Banana, the most energetic, insane, awesome band we've ever seen. Simply put, they're pretty unclassifiable. Even the language is seemingly unclassifiable; the lyrics are in English, but, well, she yells. A lot. The moment the petite front-woman starts, you'll know big (and noisy) things come in the smallest packages. We can't miss this brain-melting good time.
CCRG League Tryouts
Skateland Northpoint -
1113 Old Northpoint Road -
Dundalk
Saturday: So you wanna be a roller girl? Whether you've been inspired by the recent film "Whip It" or you just need to take out some aggression, Baltimore's only all-women roller derby league is holding tryouts. If you think you're ready for the thrills, the glory, the pain of skating and the joys of whipping it real good, show 'em what you're made of.
The Life of a Diva: Make-Up Bar Party
Saturday: Diva IS the female version of hustla, so it's about time divas got some love. An evening of people, all willing to make every woman in attendance feel like a million bucks sounds like our idea of a fine time. With professional makeup artists, massage therapists and professional photographers, plus girly drinks galore, it's a great time to be female.
Free Flea
- The Ottobar - 2549 N. Howard St. - Charles Village
Sunday: It's shopping, but different. Considering all the shenanigans that regularly occur at the Ottobar, any other event held there already holds intrigue. Without the propaganda of sales ads, the massive cluster of logos and brands, or the little brats running to get to the mall Santa, we can't wait to see what this free flea market has to offer.
Ravens 2009 Home Games
- M&T Bank Stadium - 1101 Russell St. - Downtown
Sunday: FOOOTBAAAALLL! We're along for the ride to follow our Ravens until the very end. We'll help them go all the way this year by showing our boys some hometown love as they play the undefeated Indianapolis Colts.
Art of Darkness: Inspired by Poe
- Baltimore Museum of Art - 10 Art Museum Drive - Baltimore
Through Jan. 17: There's no better way to keep it classy when appreciating the world of Poe than by exploring classic prints, drawings and illustrations inspired by the man of macabre himself. Included in the exhibit are illustrations for "The Raven" by Edouard Manet and a portrait of Poe by Henri Matisse.
