Harpers Ferry, W. Va.

The stereotypes that define West Virginia create a divide that makes the state seem as if it's on the other side of the world. In reality, West Virginia's not so far away, and a jaunty car ride little more than an hour lands tourist in historic Harpers Ferry. The town's charms are admittedly quaint, but the real appeal is Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Outdoorsy types hike, bike, tube, kayak, fish and engage in various other woodsy activities. Anyway, that's what we did.—Mark Gross
