The first tourists to visit Berkeley Springs, W. Va., were Native Americans, many of whom are believed to have come from as far away as Canada to partake of the area's noted natural, warm spring waters, which are believed to have healing powers for body and mind. American settlers discovered the area in the 1730s, and word traveled throughout the colonies. George Washington himself was a regular visitor. Centuries later, people still visit Berkeley Springs to partake of the waters, enjoy the natural setting and get away from the civilized world for a while.
