Annapolis Rock isn't far. In fact, it's hardly a road trip at all. According to Google Maps, the drive out 70 would be finished in less than an hour. True, perhaps, for more prepared navigators, but our car approached the Appalachian Trail access point on Route 40 a little later than anticipated. None of the waiting members of our party seemed to mind, as our elation at spotting Smokey the Bear elicited howls of delight which they found fairly amusing. Not even one person called us jerks as we headed toward the trail.
(Note: Our risk-taking tends to be limited to leaving our umbrella home when the weather man calls for rain, so that dude is not one of us. We're impressed, though.)
