Our favorite wheat
Credit:Mike Cook
Best bet: Widmer Hefeweizen
Where to get it: Wells Liquors
Cost: $8.99 a six pack
Bottom's up: The Widmer brothers were among the first to brew hefeweizens in the United States, so pour a Widmer and witness what a wheat is supposed to be: Slightly orange in color and a little bit cloudy. Now, taste. Ah! Widmer is not a heavy wheat. It demonstrates why Germans drink wheat beers on picnics. We detect a little bitter orange flavor (which we're happy to find), and though Widmer is slightly sweet, it's not sweet in a bubblegum sort of way. Widmer is crisp, not fizzy, and light, but packed with flavor. Essentially, it's everything Miller Lite hopes its wheat could be, but isn't.
