Vibe Crowd/Libations Sounds Service/Bottom Line
Vibe: Supremely unpretentious and low-key, Dougherty's Irish Pub in Mount Vernon is an excellent place to head with a group of friends for a night of drinking and conversation. The main room is split into two sections -- tables near the front for large groups, and booths further back for groups of four to six.

Crowd: Dougherty's has a solid and multiracial core of artists, students and older regulars. It's hard to feel out of place at this one, because there are so many different types of people. It's easy to find a seat, unless it's the weekend. When that's the case you better hope someone you know invites you to join them. Sunday evenings often pull in a decent sized crowd to watch the Ravens on the single television in the corner.

Libations: Perhaps the best thing that Dougherty's has going for it is that it has excellent prices on pitchers -- a pitcher of Bass will run you $9 and serves four people. If you order separately, it would run $14. See where I'm going with this? It behooves you to bring friends that share your taste in beer.

Sounds: There's no live music or dance floor at Dougherty's, but the bartenders play a wide variety of styles -- disco, punk, alt-rock, reggae and trance. In general, the sounds are upbeat, and the music is kept at an ideal volume -- loud enough for you to enjoy a song you like, but not so loud that you have to yell to converse with the person next to you.

Service: Decent pub food is served by a friendly waitstaff until 10 p.m. Getting drinks here, on the other hand, can sometimes take a good deal longer than it should. We wondered if the bartenders purposely made us wait to demonstrate their superiority. And when we tried to order an Irish Car Bomb, the Irish bartender got snippy and refused to make one. Not sure exactly what set him off, but c'mon, if serving drinks presents a moral problem, perhaps -- and this is just a thought -- bartending is not an appropriate career path for you.

Bottom line: Good prices and a decent environment, but nothing particularly memorable or exciting remains of the Dougherty's experience.
