Vibe: Fine dining upstairs offers a stark contrast to the scene downstairs. Descending into the basement bar of Mount Vernon's The Brewer's Art feels a lot like going below deck on a pirate ship. Even before the sun goes down, it's oppressively dark in this windowless catacomb.

Crowd: The Brewer's Art is about as urban cool as urban cool gets. On any given night, the conversations you'll overhear involve whose band is touring with whom, whose art project is opening where and whose first novel was rejected by which obtuse publishing company. Almost all patrons are in their 20s or early 30s, with a few aging hipsters thrown in for flavor.

Libations: The Brewer's Art is the proud home of what is arguably the best selection of house beers in Baltimore, led by their flagship beer Resurrection Ale. The "Rezzy" has got a serious kick; so if you prefer something a little less likely to induce a hangover, try the Pale Ale or the darker Proletary Ale.

Sounds: No live music here. The bartenders choose tunes that range from the modern rock of today to, well, the modern rock of yesterday. You're likely to hear Pixies, Talking Heads, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and other standard-bearers of what used to be the Alternative Nation, but is now really just The Nation.

Service: The bartenders here are always busy, but I've never had a problem getting served in a reasonable amount of time. Unsettlingly attentive busboys are unusually adept at emptying ashtrays once they've acquired more than a few butts. Important note: The Brewer's Art is notorious for not playing around with closing times. When they say, "last call," what they really mean is, "we're about to throw your asses out any second now."

Bottom Line: This is the best bar in Baltimore for frustrated, misunderstood artists of any stripe and the people who love them. Even if you lack such pretensions, it's still worth checking out for the environment and amazing house beers.
