Typically, the term café conjures visions of intimate coffee shops—espresso drinks, poetry readings, Wi-fi and the like. A bay café, then, might relocate said coffee shop somewhere along the water. At Bay Café in Canton, you'd be half right. On the water? Yes. Cozy and intimate? Not so much. More like immensely spacious, with lots of tables and a generous outdoor dining and drinking area. Oh yeah, and palm trees.
Drinks: With two bars inside and another one outside, Bay Café is not lacking in the liquor department. There's shelf-upon-shelf of booze, you'll be happy to know. Most beers come in cans, though there are a few choice bottles available. The short list of specialty drinks includes juicy margaritas and dirty martinis made with high-end vodka.
Decor: The overall atmosphere of Bay Café is just what you'd expect from a restaurant/bar on the water: Laid back with the potential to get rowdy when the mood is right. Though that's often the case on weekends, low-key weeknights are a good bet for waterfront seating and views of boats passing in the marina.
A tiki hut-looking bar is situated at the far end of Bay Cafe's sand pit, which is made more "beachy" by the presence of the aforementioned palm trees. There's room to move, mix and mingle, not to mention a soft landing should you discover the hard way heels weren't designed for beachcombing. Plus, sitting outside provides great people-watching opportunities as locals stroll, run and walk dogs along the path that follows the shoreline.
Crowd: Mostly populated by early- to mid-20-somethings, Bay Café weekends are the place to party—helped by the fact that there is a bikini contest Saturday nights before sundown. Weeknights, you'll find just about anyone who wants to come have a meal or a drink on the water.
Insider tips: So much fresh air can really work up an appetite, and thankfully Bay Café has a menu for the munchies. It's not an extensive menu, but there is a selection of easy-to-eats, like fried mozz sticks, poppers, salads, pizzas, overstuffed sandwiches, burgers and some heartier entrees, too, like steak. The jerk chicken appetizer is particularly tasty.
Bottom line: A great view and laid back atmosphere overrule the scent of sand and fish that sometimes comes with proximity to Baltimore's harbor, making Bay Café a nice place to enjoy a cocktail on a warm summer's night.
