What makes a great bar great? Is it cheap drinks, original drinks or just lots and lots of drinks? Would you rather have too many choices, or none at all? Good music, live music or themed music? Does everyone have to know your name? Metromix thinks it's not just one of those things as much as it's the right combination of a lot of these things.

Canton has been—and continues to be—a prime location for the sobriety–challenged. Face it; there aren't many other places in Baltimore where you can wink at Mr. Boh while drinking his product. You have water on one side and fun on the other three.

Canton's centerpiece is a square block of bars, aptly named the Square, but—to borrow a slogan from one of our picks—we tried to "Think Outside the Box, and Drink Outside the Square" with a few of our choices. No longer should Canton's bar scene be defined by that little patch of grass. Canton is ever–expanding—outward and upward—to the highest of Baltimore's watering–hole heights. That's not to say some of our picks aren't on the Square, though. Few things in life are greater than stumbling out of one bar and falling into another. (Though stumbling into The Pretzel Store at 2 a.m. is a pretty close second.)

Here's the best of what Canton has to offer.
