Baltimore Album Quilts.. Fantasic!
By DM from Mount Vernon, April 5, 2009

MdHS has a short term exhibt (through June 30) displaying several "Baltimore Album Quilts". I've seen photos of some of these pieces - but seeing them 'live and up close'. . . Wow! Look for phenominal needlework, detail and design. If you love textile work and traditional craftsmanship - this is a "must see".

I've lived in the City quite a long time but just had my first visit to the Maryland Historical Society. Wow, I was very surprised by its museum and exhibits. I can't say that I'm a real history buff but I have a really good time and was taken in by all the neat stuff!

This is a great museum. If you love history, especially Maryland history, this is the place to visit. They have something for everyone, adults and children alike. They have some permanent exhibits, but other exhibits that change frequently so you may want to invest in a membership. Their library provides a wealth of knowledge, especially for those researching their family history. This is a must see!! Can't wait to go back.

One of Baltimore's best kept secrets

Want to get a handle on the history of Maryland, find out where your family came from, or what your Baltimore neighborhood looked like 80 years ago? This is the place to visit... Tucked away just a block west of the Washington Monument- the Maryland Historical Society is great place to spend a few hours- or an entire day. Interesting exhibits of Maryland history, Francis Scott Key's manuscript of the "Star Spangled Banner", Nipper- the RCA dog, Charles Willison Peale paintings, period furniture, ship models, decoys, silver, and jewelry- from across the state can keep you occupied for hours. Professionals and amateurs can research the library collection's 7 million documents to find family histories, manuscripts, immigration records, prints, maps and photographs. Look for some highlights: Betsy Patterson's diamond and ruby tiara.. Peale's painting: "Exhuming the Mastadon"- and the bones... Col. Tench Tilghman's uniform from the Revolutionary War... Eubie Blake's baton... and more. You'll be surpised at what you find there!
